It was 2008 probably when Anurag Kashyap announced that he’d make a movie on the popular Indian comic book anti-hero character, Doga.
The whole idea was very exciting: one it was a favourite Indian comic book character of many, and two, Anurag Kashyap was going to direct it.
But after years of anticipation, Anurag Kashyap said that he dropped the project.
However, meanwhile another Indian Superhero made his debut; Bhavesh Joshi Superhero.
The character, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, has few resemblances with the character Doga and the story is set in Mumbai too, the city of Doga as well.
Now, there’s a chance that Bhavesh Joshi Superhero can fill in the blank that was meant for Doga as the whole idea of Bhavesh Joshi Superhero is also about an ordinary man standing up against crime in Mumbai.
Are there any plans for Doga? Are there any chances we can see the favourite Indian anti-hero on screen or not?
And, most importantly why did Anurag Kashyap leave the project?
But first let us know a little about the character, Doga
Doga: The Indian Anti-Hero
Doga was first introduced in a comic strip in the year 1992.
Tarun Kumar and Sanjay Gupta introduced Doga under their publishing company; Raj Comics.
Sanjay Gupta said that he conceptualised Doga in the 80s but waited till he introduced few superheroes first.
Doga’s alter ego Suraj, an orphan who comes from Chambal (Madhya Pradesh).
He comes to Mumbai and takes shelter in Adrak Chacha’s gym. Adrak Chacha lets him stay with him, and Suraj helped him during the day and tried working out at night in the gym. Adrak Chacha notices that.
Adrak Chacha trains him and then asks his brothers, Haldi, Dhaniya, and Kalimirch to train him too.
Doga is physically stronger than an average man and a skilled fighter, and marksman.
The most interesting idea behind the character is that he stands for ordinary people and he shows no mercy to criminals.
His methods of punishing are brutal, and he believes in eradicating the problem from its roots.
Over time, Doga earned a cult status among Indian comic book readers.
The character is raw, no-nonsense, and intriguing.
A professor of history at the prestigious Princeton University wrote a book called, “Mumbai Fables” (Published: 2010) and in that book, there’s a mention of Doga!
Doga undoubtedly has the potential to change the Indian audiences’ perception towards Indian Superheroes.
Why Anurag Kashyap dropped the project?
Anurag Kashyap announced that he was going to make a movie on Doga with Kunal Kapoor (actor) in the titular role.
We didn’t hear anything about the movie in years.
After almost nine years, Anurag Kashyap broke his silence and many hearts, announcing that he won’t do the movie!
He blamed Raj Comics. In his words Raj comics, “got greedy” and they were planning to make the movie, “like a Marvel movie!”
Therefore, he left the project and blamed Raj comics for that.
Doga: Coming out of Comics!
Doga is all set to have his own web series.
In 2017 Sanjay Gupta announced on the Raj Comics’ official Facebook page that they have already started writing the screenplay.
In 2018, Raj Comics released the teaser of the short film on Doga named, Doga – Mumbai ka Rakhwala (Doga – Protector of Mumbai)
The exciting news is that we can see a Doga live-action web series, short film or a movie as the work and intention is apparently visible.
I, for one, is excited to see Doga on screen as I believe that if done right, it can take the Indian Superhero culture to a positive future.
However, the exciting news came along more shocks as well.
So, let’s just hope Doga makes it this time 🙂
